Thanks to COVID-19, kids are spending more time than ever on screens. Computers, iPads, and phones have become their primary tools for education and entertainment. But not all screen time is negative. Some learning programs are transforming how children develop their self-image and education. Guest Anthony Frasier shares how he is driving positive change with learning programs that nurture children's confidence and intellectual growth.
Anthony Frasier is bringing the learning program Akili and Me, along with African folktales, to the ABF podcast. This initiative is vital because, as he explains, it’s more common to see talking animals in media than a Black child leading a story. Akili and Me changes that by portraying a strong Black protagonist rather than a supporting character.
Akili and Me is a learning program based in Tanzania that functions as a virtual school. It goes beyond traditional subjects like English and math by focusing on social and emotional skills, reading, language development, and even introducing children to Swahili. This learning program has been a game-changer for many families.
With the search term "learning at home" trending, having accessible learning programs is crucial for Black families. The Akili and Me podcast makes this learning program available to even more households, offering engaging content twice a week.
Anthony Frasier also discusses his company, ABF Creative, which produces African Folktales. These stories are a vital part of learning programs, offering cultural representation that helps children see themselves in positive narratives. This, in turn, strengthens their sense of identity beyond the stereotypes often portrayed in mainstream media.
In Frasier’s book, Don't Dumb Down My Greatness, he emphasizes how learning programs that feature relatable characters and experiences improve children’s performance in school, work, and life. He states, “Children need to see themselves in successful stories to understand that self-development is business development. They need to dream beyond being athletes or musicians—to becoming CEOs and entrepreneurs.”
Achieving long-term success starts with small steps. The journey to becoming a business leader, a CEO, or an industry innovator begins with exposure to the right learning programs at an early age. Instead of spending hours on mindless entertainment, parents can turn to learning programs like Akili and Me. These platforms help plant the seeds for future success by nurturing children's intellect and self-worth.
