How To Make Back to School Night Easy And Exciting For You

Last week I talked about how I did’t want to attend Back-To-School night. Guess what happened? I decided to reach out to the teacher and explain why it was difficult to attend. She was very understanding and emailed me the Back-to-School Presentation and put all of the hand outs in my sons backpack.

An Individual Education Plan (IEP) Binder Is the #1 Tool You Need

It’s that time of year again. I just received my email appointment for my son's Individual Education Plan, otherwise known as IEP, meeting to create his goals for next year. These meetings used to be bittersweet because its the moment that not only am I holding the school accountable for my son's progress, but also […]

Mommy, Are You Having A Bad Day?

Once we get home and we’re going into the house Zavier says “ Mommy I’m going to my room so you can have time to yourself. You seemed stressed out.”

As I watch both of my boys go up the stairs I’m in awe that my little boy with Autism Spectrum Disorder who could not empathize a year ago is now honing into how I feel by my body language and tone. It’s also a moment to check in with myself because obviously my behavior indicates I’m stressed.

How Special Children Plans for a Fun Halloween?

“ Mommy I want to me Boruto this Halloween, Naruto on the 2nd Halloween, Deadpool on the 3rd one, My Hero Academia for the 4th one and ….for the fifth one I’m going to be a Ninja. Ok?” After I tell him ok he runs back up the stairs.

How can a Spirit Day Open Up Meaningful Conversations?

When you have a child on the spectrum you learn they are all about immersing themselves in what Interests them.

On that note Asar decided this morning for spirit day at school he’s going 90’s hip hop.

Me: “ Are you doing East or West coast?”

Asar: What type of clothes did they wear ? What’s the difference?

I gave him a quick answer.

How Powerful IEP Meetings can be?

Yesterday Zavier runs down the stairs saying “ Mommy I need help spelling a word. I can spell short words but long ones are a little hard for me. Can you help me?”

I’m so happy! Because he has stopped saying “ I can’t read! I can’t spell!” Instead he’s confident in his skills and asks for support.

Why I think School Meetings are Worth My Time?

Then I get the Back-to-School Night reminders and I’m thinking “ I hate Back to School Night.” I know this is a surprise since I’m 110% about my kids. However, as a single mom with 2 kids who go to school in Virginia and Maryland while we live in DC means that I have a crazy commute during rush hour. In addition to having to pick one of the boys up first , get back into DC to pick up my other son, and then return to the school.  Are you feeling the WOW factor yet? If not, let me add the Back to School Nights are on a Wednesday and Thursday.

So I pose the question to myself “What’s important about Back-to-School Night when I meet with my sons teachers this month for Parent /Teacher Conferences? Why do they have so many meetings?”
