We all have heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But do you understand how important it is for your child, beyond the beloved cereal? Why am I singling out the go-to cereal? Because we are told by the food industry that our child's favorite cereal is healthy and chock full of vitamins. However, they fail to mention the amount of sugar (high fructose corn syrup) that it contains along with artificial flavors, preservatives, and genetically modified foods. Sugar first thing in the morning will have your child craving sugar for the rest of the day while the other ingredients are known for affecting the adversely affecting the digestive system and brain function. The cereal you grew up on is not the same cereal you feed your child.
So let's talk about what other go-to breakfast items can we give our children instead of cereal that will increase their attention in school and increase their daily intake of protein and minerals that will combat any deficiencies that may be increasing your child's symptoms of their diagnosis.
It's always important to start the day off with a protein and those veggies ( kids love to hate!) because it sets the tone for your child's cravings throughout the day. Here are some ideas :
Breakfast Egg Muffins - the best thing about these is that you can either make them the night before or prep the batter and throw them in the oven for 30 minutes while getting everyone ready for the day. Try to include fresh veggies, just dice them up really fine.
Breakfast Scrambles - my favorite dish because you can literally throw your veggies in a pan with your meat choice and then toss in your eggs and scramble them up.
Protein Superfood Smoothies - grab a small amount of greens, banana, protein powder, and your child’s favorite organic fruit( frozen or fresh) and milk and blend them. Ideally, a NutriBullet or Ninja are the best blenders to use since they blend the veggies and fruit to the point they are liquid but they also are digested in the system as though you’re eating them instead of drinking them.
Breakfast Cookies- these are my favorite sneaky breakfast treat. Honestly, how many kids don’t like cookies? I like to make mine ahead of time on Sunday. Check out my favorite recipe.
These are a few of my favorite options. For more options check out my Kids Meal Board on Pinterest. Another quickie for you is to add a little protein powder to your child’s pancake mix or make them a simple protein shake. Always focus on how you can make good changes that are doable for you. Let me know which recipes you’ve tried and did they work in the comments. I’d love to know which ones I should try with my son.
